When I attended my first lecture on...

From the February 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I attended my first lecture on Christian Science the lecturer quoted the opening statement in the Preface to Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." This statement was all that I consciously retained of the lecture, but I pondered it for days.

Some time later I was given a Christian Science Sentinel and a copy of The Christian Science Monitor; and I read them earnestly. I did not understand much of the Sentinel except the testimonies, but I had a feeling that I had found the truth for which I was seeking. At that time I had been suffering for two years from a severe nervous breakdown. The doctor had been unable to help me, although I had been under his constant care. One day as I was thinking about God and His goodness I was inspired to get out of bed and go about my normal activities. This I did and felt no ill effects. I started attending a local branch Church of Christ, Scientist, regularly and gained steadily in the understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him. Soon the nervous condition completely disappeared.

One Sunday morning as I was going to my car in order to drive to church, I sprained my ankle. I got up and went on my way, but when I returned home and the family noticed the swelling, the ankle became so much worse that I had to have help to get out of my chair. Two days later a Christian Scientist came to sell me a subscription to the Monitor. When she saw my bandaged ankle she began talking to me about the week's Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and spoke some scientific truths. She told me that I did not need the bandage and that I did not need to wait a week or two, or even an hour, to be expressing normal activity. This seemed reasonable to me, and I took off the bandage and walked normally from that moment. My husband was very much surprised and pleased to find me free when he came home from work.
