How very grateful I am to Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, for providing us with her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which contains the remedy for all human problems. I am also grateful for the periodicals—The Christian Science Journal with its healing metaphysical articles, editorials, and testimonies; the Christian Science Sentinel with some more messages of Love and Truth that replenish and refresh our thought; The Christian Science Monitor, our daily newspaper, with its quiet and unbiased views on current events. It was a Sentinel which introduced me to Christian Science.
From about 1927 to 1935 I had been wheeled about in an invalid chair. I had been in and out of nursing homes and hospitals and had undergone many operations. While I was waiting to go into a nursing home to gain strength for a major operation, which an eminent physician had described as my last hope, a druggist told me that Christian Science had saved his wife's life. This interested me so much that I asked him if she would visit me. She came at once and after a talk with me left a Sentinel for me to read. I was very much impressed with the articles and testimonies and felt that here was the answer to my many prayers. But the disturbing physical ailment which was troubling me, a severe abdominal and heart condition, became almost unbearable, and I was taken to the nursing home.
Whilst I was there the sister of the doctor who was attending me visited me and brought along a Sentinel. She began to tell me of what Christian Science had done for her: when her life had been despaired of after medical science could do no more for her, she had been healed by Christian Science treatment and had begun a new life. She left the Sentinel with me and also furnished me with a copy of the textbook. After I had read Science and Health for some time, the pain abated, and I insisted upon returning home in order that I might obtain more information regarding this religion.
