CHRISTIAN SCIENCE AND ATOMIC FORCE

From the May 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The present time is frequently referred to as the "Atomic Age." Rapid development of atomic and hydrogen force, with their implications for evil as well as for good, is stirring the thoughts of men. In weary bewilderment they are seeking to find and understand something which comforts, protects, preserves, and guides. The listening heart knows that this is the search for God, the loving, omnipotent God, who through the centuries has healed sin, sickness, and want and prevented disaster. The prophets of Bible times had just such experiences of His healing and care. Christ Jesus exemplified the power of the law of God to heal and protect.

In the fullness of time Mary Baker Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," explained this power in words suited to our present time. Thus she restored to men the possibility of the fulfillment of Jesus' promise to those who believed 0n him when he said (John 14:12), "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." Christ Jesus foretold the coming of the Comforter. Students of Christian Science know that this Science is the promised Comforter because it comforts not by enabling one to submit cheerfully to evil, but by rendering the evil powerless.

The world now has the right to ask, "What has Christian Science to say about atomic force and the developments of physical sciences connected with it?" It has much to say. To seek the solution of any problem in Christian Science is to begin with God, Spirit, the only power, presence, and intelligence. To begin with God is to comprehend man made in His image and likeness, spiritual, inseparable from Him, reflecting His qualities. In proportion as men understand and use these great facts of existence they are endowed with power over matter's aggressions.
