In the Bible we read of Elijah (I Kings 19:9, 11): "He came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, . . . What doest thou here, Elijah? . . . And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord."
Some time ago a very sad and lonely woman read these words. She was a Christian Scientist, but a grief that seemed too great to be borne had come into her life, and self-pity and bitterness appeared to have taken over her thinking.
But now she read over and over again those words from I Kings. The words, "What doest thou here," she concluded, had been meant just for her. "Why, I'm just like Elijah," she said to herself. "I've shut myself up in a dark cave of self-pity and fear and discouragement. Maybe, like Elijah, I should listen to God and try to come out and stand on the mount."
