We gain spirituality as we relinquish false human ambitions, hopes, and desires to the will of God. If we are reluctant to do so, it is because we have not sufficient faith to trust God with our problems. And faith is lacking because we do not understand the nature of God. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 597), Mary Baker Eddy defines "will" in part as, "The might and wisdom of God." Wisdom and might are qualities of God; so why should we hesitate to submit our human plans to the design of God? Our submission to the divine will is a confident turning to God in a faith of understanding. Such understanding enables us to prove that God's way is unerring and can be joyfully manifested in our human experience. In this manner we deny any seeming power of the human will, the opposite of God's will.
Christian Scientists do not accept the belief that God's will for us is often a sore trial or that bliss comes to us in a "hereafter" and is commensurate with our ability to withstand these trials. Rather does Christian Science teach that God's will for us is harmonious and applicable to humanity's needs. The Lord's Prayer reads in part (Matt. 6:10), "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." Mrs. Eddy gives the spiritual sense of this line (Science and Health, p. 17), "Enable us to know,—as in heaven, so on earth,—God is omnipotent, supreme."
In our present stage of spiritual unfoldment we can place our affairs in God's hands. When we do this we comply with the demands of the First Commandment, for we are recognizing no power other than God. We pay homage to God as we subordinate false human knowledge to the understanding that we are in reality the spiritual ideas of infinite Mind. This is not surrendering our identity; rather is it finding our true likeness in God. We thus prove the unity of God and man, Mind and its infinite manifestation, and are enabled to do God's bidding. His will is to protect, sustain, and guide us. Consequently as we renounce all willful human plans, we accept the unlimited horizons of Mind. We are blessed by our submission to the divine will and experience a new humility. The rewards, which come through our placing God's plan above all else, are greater, far greater, than those devised by human knowledge.
