GROWING UP

From the December 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In Christian Science growing up may be considered as growing upward, as ascending in thought, and as increasing in the understanding of one's higher nature. This higher nature, the Christ, knows no birth, maturity, or decay, but forever expresses the qualities of God, unchanging Life, Truth, and Love.

From a material standpoint the process of growing up is ordinarily thought of as the development of an immature mortal into maturity or adulthood. This process, to mortal sense, is often inharmonious. To bring order and harmony into the situation parents and educators have exerted great efforts, but these efforts usually have been based on human theories concerning the physical body and human nature.

From a Christian Science standpoint how shall we approach the subject of growing up? This religion explains that man, the real man, is spiritual and eternal. One who understands this fact can meet and master any of the random, unprincipled beliefs of mortal mind. The design of Science is to bring order to the chaos of human, material theories and to establish harmony for troubled humanity. This may be likened to creation, as described in Genesis (1:2, 3): "The earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." This light, or enlightenment, solves the problems of youth as well as those of age.
