The understanding of the nature and source of spiritual power is essential to the student of Christian Science, for it is the spiritual power in the Christian Science treatment which heals the sick, casts out sin, and restores harmony where discord has appeared to reign. Without spiritual power, the demonstration of Christian Science would not be possible, and Science would be an abstract theory. The right understanding of this power enables one to demonstrate it with abundant success.
Spirit is the only Mind; therefore spiritual power is this Mind's own divine activity. This power is the Word of God, or Spirit, expressing omnipotence, for we read concerning this Word that "it shall not return unto me [Spirit] void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it" (Isa. 55:11). The power of Spirit is infallible. Spiritual power does not fluctuate, but invariably expresses infinite Mind, supported by the ever-operative law of divine intelligence.
Indicating the unlimited healing capacity of spiritual power, Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 9): "The spiritual power of a scientific, right thought, without a direct effort, an audible or even a mental argument, has oftentimes healed inveterate diseases." Since Spirit is infinite, spiritual power must also be infinite. It can never be limited, never restricted, never deficient. It is inexhaustible. And because Spirit is infinite, there is no room for any lesser power or any opposing power called either material force or material resistance. These are but false beliefs, and the discordant effects which seem to spring from them are annihilated when confronted with the natural might of Christ, Truth, for they are seen as completely devoid of reality, having no Principle and no origin.
