"THE BABE WE ARE TO CHERISH"

From the December 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The record of the birth of Jesus may easily be regarded by many Christians as one of the outstanding stories in the Bible—by some, perhaps the greatest. In fact, our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, thought it fitting for Christian Scientists to hold in remembrance the birth of Jesus. This she considered one way of showing our reverence and gratitude to the great Way-shower. All men are blessed by this great event, although many are not awake to its importance.

Mentally endowed and anointed with the Christ, the divine nature, the Bethlehem babe was in later years to challenge the existence of matter and evil and to prove man's birthright of dominion as a son of God. It was the power of the Christ, not his human personality, to which Jesus referred when he said (Matt. 11:28,29): "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls."

Christian Scientists gratefully join with their Christian brethren in loving and cherishing the Bethlehem babe and the man Jesus, but they love and cherish above all the Godlikeness which inspired his every thought and act. They recognize that he was governed entirely by the law of God, of Spirit. And they are grateful that this law has been revealed to men as an eternal gift from the Father. It is the Comforter, or divine Science, which Jesus said would remain with us forever.
