"The secret place of the most High," of which the Psalmist sings in the ninety-first Psalm, is not a cloister where truth is concealed, but the sanctuary of Spirit where God is revealed and where spiritual understanding gives dominion to man.
The security of Mind, God, is man's freehold right. The secret place is not merely a sanctuary into which one flees in time of trouble. It is the sacred safety of Love which cannot be found by the fowler or touched by the noisome pestilence. It is the gentle presence of the Christ; it is the quiet, comforting, abiding consciousness of Soul, Spirit. In this sacred place we are safe under the shadow of His wings. Dwelling therein we cannot be touched by malpractice. "The secret place of the most High" is unknown to those who would work mischief or do wickedly. The laws of Truth are there and in action to protect us from immorality and infidelity, or from "the destruction that wasteth at noonday."
Jesus knew the power of the Christ. He desired to bring all men under its influence. He said (Matt. 23:37), "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!" Perhaps the Master was thinking of the ninety-first Psalm when he uttered these words. They echo the thought of the Psalmist (verse 4), "He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust."
