GOD'S LAWS OF HEALTH

From the March 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Everyone desires health. Many have longed for the strength and freedom which accompany health; yet, depending upon unpredictable material means for attaining health, they have not found it. Christian Science reveals unfailing laws of health, laws which have their source in God. As we come to understand these laws, fears are cast out; our bodies become harmonious; peace and order, vigor and harmony, are proved to be the natural states of man. For man is God's image, His exact likeness, and not the fleshly mortal which the eye beholds. Man is a spiritual being, "born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God" (John 1:13); and his heritage of health is a fixed fact in the Science of being.

A law, to be actual, must be a fixed fact, an unbreakable truth, the constant action of a force. God's laws of health express His changeless will for the well-being of His sons. What are generally called health laws are not true laws, because they change with human opinion, particularly medical opinion. What is considered indispensable to health at one period is discarded as meaningless at another. Mary Baker Eddy says in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 184), "The so-called laws of health are simply laws of mortal belief." Until mankind seek the laws of health in divine Mind instead of in matter, they will wander from one belief to another and will find nothing permanently trustworthy to sustain health.

Christ Jesus could demonstrate true health laws because he understood God's will. The Master's every act was in obedience to that will. He said (John 6:38), "I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me." Many of Jesus' works were those of healing; the Bible records that he even healed multitudes as he addressed them. Was he not illustrating God's laws of health in every single case? Was he not proving that the Father's will for every individual is soundness, harmony, vitality of thought and action? Surely he was, and we can accept the instruction of his fine illustrations and go on to prove for ourselves that God's will is eternally done, His law forever established.
