LOVE'S PURPOSE

From the March 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance." What comfort and encouragement lie in this compassionate assurance of Mary Baker Eddy, found on pages 149 and 150 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany."

Always, in every place, and throughout any experience, the all-embracing love of our Father-Mother God is at hand, guarding, guiding, and sustaining. Our Leader's statement is no mollification of or exhortation to passive endurance of tribulation. Rather is it a clear call to trust in Love's ever-available healing ministrations, to go forward in joyous expectation that Love will show us the way out of our troubles. Let us not forget that it is ever the purpose of Love to reveal man's indestructible well-being.

Christian Science reveals God as Truth, and there can be no evil in Truth. Our God is Principle and could not permit any imperfection in His creation. He is Life, all-inclusive and all-pervading, wherein is no single element of suffering to disturb the bliss, serenity, and untouchability of man's being. It is the ever-presence of God's goodness that ensures the absence of sin, disease, and death. These inharmonies are not God-made; hence they are unreal. They can only seem real to a consciousness that believes it is separate from God. This consciousness, or mortal mind, being apart from God, Truth, is illusory, a dream state, from which mankind need only to awaken to find real and harmonious being.
