In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy makes it very clear that evil, including all disease, is lawless and impotent. I have occasion to be grateful for this revelation, for it has been of help to me in times of difficulty.
A number of years ago I was working alone in an office and was bending over a table spread with accounting papers. While in this position I was affected by a heart attack so severe that for a time I could not straighten myself up. Immediately I denied the reality of the pain and the power of matter to destroy me. As I made this emphatic denial there came to me a statement from the textbook (p. 418): "Truth is affirmative, and confers harmony." I accepted this affirmation and experienced relief.
I left the office and started to get someone to drive me home so that I might rest. Then I stopped. What was I doing? I was presuming that God was more approachable in my home than in the office, that divine Love could heal me more readily when I was in a horizontal position than it could when I was on my feet. At that moment I became clearly aware of the present power of God to heal and save. I returned to the office and resumed my work. No further difficulty of this nature was experienced until years later.
