MORNING THOUGHTS

From the April 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How wonderful it is on waking in the morning to turn our first thoughts to God—away from the erroneous evidence of the material senses to the true, unchanging, spiritual facts of scientific being as taught in Christian Science.

Mortals have a tendency to ask upon awaking, "How am I this morning?" Perhaps the answer is that one did not sleep well, that he feels grumpy and tired. Perhaps the thought that comes is, "I shall never have the time or the strength to do all that I have to do this day." In a few short, almost unconscious, moments error, or mortal mind, has established the day negatively upon a false foundation of materiality, with all its accompaniments of discomfort and unhappiness. In accepting error's arguments, one has admitted unquestioningly the false testimony of physical sense and has deemed oneself helpless before this testimony.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, recognized this tendency of the carnal mind and yearned to free mankind from its bonds. After making a statement in regard to looking to the body, she writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 261): "Now reverse this action. Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality. Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts."
