RIGHT THINKING

From the November 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Right thinking is a blessed and beneficent activity of human consciousness, which exercises a liberating influence. The highest form of human thinking is prayer. Opposed to right thinking is the activity of so-called thinking in mortal consciousness, which all too often ends in morbid musing.

On page vii of the Preface to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes, "The time for thinkers has come." And she adds: "Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity. Contentment with the past and the cold conventionality of materialism are crumbling away." Here we learn of two different types of mental activity: The thinking which renews and heals and for which the time has come, and the material thinking, the "crumbling away" of which we are already experiencing.

Every earnest effort to think aright culminates, Christian Scientists find, in prayer and is blessed with success. Christlike thinking or scientific prayer displaces the influence of that type of thinking which is based on corporeality or sensuality and frees men from morbid musing.
