Since coming into Christian Science about fifteen years ago, I have had many proofs of its healing power. Words are inadequate to express my gratitude to God for His goodness as revealed to me through the study and application of this Science.
I was led to go to a library for my first information about Christian Science. Not knowing what to look for, I started reading the first book I found, which was an authorized biography of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Before I left the library I obtained a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. After reading this book for only a few hours, I realized I had found a God at hand and not one afar off, as I had been led to accept in my orthodox religious training.
After a few days of continued study of Science and Health, I found I was no longer smoking cigarettes; this was something I had done for a long time, although I had unsuccessfully tried to give it up by human methods. At this time too I lost the desire for strong drink. Also during these first few days of my study of Christian Science, some unlovely traits of character fell away, such as bad temper and swearing. Also healed at that time was my susceptibility to long periods of mental depression.
After a few weeks of continued study of Science and Health and attending a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I found myself free from the haunting fear of consumption, a disease with which both my parents had passed on when I was quite young. According to medical predictions, all the children of the family would meet a similar fate, and for many years I had symptoms of the dreaded disease. With the passing of this fear such an improved change occurred in my physical appearance that my friends began to remark about it. In just a few weeks I had gained over twenty pounds in weight, and as a result I had to have my clothing altered, in some cases two or three times.
All these changes were the result of my study of the textbook, my reading of other authorized books and literature on Christian Science, and my attending branch church services. No specific prayerful work was done on these problems. Apparently the healings were the result of inspiration and a better understanding of God and of man's relation to Him. Also, a notable improvement was taking place in my home and at work, for a great deal more harmony and love were being expressed.
Most of all, Christian Science gave me a better understanding of God as divine Love, our Father-Mother. During the past fifteen years I have relied on no material method of healing, have taken no medicine, and have been away from my duties only a very few days because of illness.
Through Christian Science I was healed of a severe attack of influenza in less than four days and also of a painful tooth condition. Lost articles have been found, and I have been protected on several occasions from storms while on automobile trips. Along with other passengers, I was beautifully protected while on a bus when it collided with an oncoming car.
During the Second World War, I served several months with the Armed Forces in Europe as a Red Cross field director and also as a volunteer Wartime Worker, as that title was then known. Some of this time was spent in combat situations, but I was in every way protected from all harm.
It is a great privilege to be a member of The Mother Church, to have served in several capacities in branch church work, and to know the joy of class instruction. I am grateful to God, who in His infinite wisdom has revealed Himself to mankind in ways that have best met their needs. My thanks go out to our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, who demonstrated step by step how to overcome the belief of life in matter. And I am unspeakably grateful to Mrs. Eddy, who, inspired by the work of our Master, brought to this age the Science of the Christ, the divine Comforter promised by Jesus.
