IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

The Mother Church Fund for Armed Services Activities and Postwar Emergencies

The Fund opened in January, 1942, known as "The Mother Church Wartime Fund," is now designated "The Mother Church Fund for Armed Services Activities and Postwar Emergencies." As heretofore, this Fund will be drawn upon to meet the needs of Christian Scientists in the armed services; to aid those willing to rely wholly on Christian Science for healing in veterans' hospitals; to conduct Christian Science services, give treatments, and help young Christian Scientists to become adjusted to their military experience.

Large quantities of authorized literature continue to be distributed to service personnel and veterans and placed in chaplains' offices, libraries, hospitals, and on board ship. Service Editions of the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy are also supplied free of charge. Aid is also extended from this Fund to civilians needing material assistance because of emergencies resulting from war.

This Fund meets the salaries and expenses of Christian Science Ministers and other workers. The number of these workers is increasing; they serve in the United States, Canada, Alaska, Australia, Hawaii, Korea, and the Pacific islands, as well as in England, Germany, and France.

Last year approximately a quarter of a million dollars was expended by The Mother Church for this important work. Our deep appreciation goes to the Field for its loving support. The urgent need continues. We are confident that Christian Scientists will joyfully respond to the opportunity of maintaining and expanding these fruitful activities of our movement.

Contributions for this Fund will be gratefully received and should be sent to Roy Garrett Watson, Treasurer, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.

SUPPORTING OUR HERALDS IN THEIR MISSION

In response to a widespread interest in the various editions of The Herald of Christian Science, the Editors are taking this opportunity to explain something of the purpose of the Heralds and the nature of their contents.

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who gave the name to each of our periodicals, lists them and indicates their mission in an item entitled "Something in a Name" in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany." Here she gives the mission of the Heralds, when she speaks of the German edition of the Herald, the only Herald published at that time. To quote (p. 353): "The third, Der Herold der Christian Science, to proclaim the universal activity and availability of Truth."

The Heralds, surmounting language barriers, are proclaiming "the universal activity and availability of Truth" in nine languages. There is also an edition in English Braille. Naturally, the various language editions—German, French, Scandinavian (Danish-Norwegian-Swedish), Dutch, and Spanish-Portuguese-Italian—are intended primarily for those parts of the Field where the languages of those editions are spoken, and the Heralds, therefore, can in no way replace, or be substituted for, The Christian Science Journal or the Christian Science Sentinel.

Our Heralds are unusual in their make-up, having the English opposite the translation. For this reason they are helping many who wish to learn English in order to be able to read our Leader's writings in the original language. The contents of each edition are selected with the thought of meeting the needs of the readers of that edition. A large portion of the material in the Heralds is reprinted from the Journal and the Sentinel. Occasionally religious articles are also reprinted from The Christian Science Monitor, and from time to time articles and editorials appear which have not previously been published. Articles and testimonies written originally in foreign languages are often included. Therefore the same articles do not appear in all the Heralds.

There are many ways in which the readers of our periodicals can support the Heralds in the fulfilling of their great mission. Some readers may wish to subscribe to them for themselves; others may wish to send subscriptions to individuals or to literature distribution committees of branch churches or societies where the Heralds meet a special need; and still others may prefer to put the amount they would pay for the subscriptions into the Donation Account of The Christian Science Publishing Society for this purpose.

The Journal, Sentinel, and Herald Editorial Department is always glad to answer any inquiry about the Heralds. However, subscriptions, subscription donations, and any questions relating to them should be sent to the Circulation Department of The Christian Science Publishing Society. Correspondence intended for either of these two departments should be addressed to the proper department in The Christian Science Publishing Society, One Norway Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.

"DAILY PRAYER" TRANSLATIONS

The Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy are happy to announce that the "Daily Prayer" from the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy (Art. VIII, Sect. 4) has now been made available in card folder form in the five languages in which the Church Manual is published—Dutch, French, German, Spanish, and Swedish.

These translations are on a card folder approximately 3½x4½ inches, printed in dark blue ink on light blue stock. The English text faces the translation as in the eight previous translations: Czech, Danish, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, and Russian. The price is 5 cents each.

Orders should be sent to Horace J. Carver, Publishers' Agent, One Norway Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.

MEMBERSHIP IN THE MOTHER CHURCH BRINGS DEEP SATISFACTION

Very often we hear members exclaim, "How glad I am to be a member of The Mother Church!" They go on to add how grateful they are to take part in this great movement that is doing so much for the world.

Information regarding membership will be gladly supplied by the Clerk of The Mother Church.

Application blanks may be obtained at Christian Science Reading Rooms, from practitioners listed in The Christian Science Journal, or from clerks of branch churches and societies. Applications may also be obtained from Gordon V. Comer, Clerk, 107 Falmouth Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.

NOTICE

Lectures in Europe

As soon as possible, after the announcement in June following the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church as to which lecturers are to be assigned to Great Britain, Ireland, and the Continent, clerks of the churches and societies in those countries should make application for lectures. These applications should be received not later than July 1. If a church or society wishes to sponsor a lecture during July or August, application should be made promptly to The Christian Science Board of Lectureship.

When executive boards are appointing lecture committees in the various churches and societies, it would be advantageous to keep in thought that the members of a committee should be able to communicate with each other during July and August.

It is not practicable for the members of the Board of Lectureship to arrange lecture schedules until all applications have been received. Therefore your early co-operation will be appreciated and will help the lecturer in the prompt and harmonious arrangement of individual dates. Should there be a desire to make an extra call to meet a need in a locality, application for a lecturer would of course be handled as expeditiously as possible.

FOR FASTER SERVICE ON YOUR ADDRESS CHANGE

You can receive faster, more efficient service if at least three weeks before a change of address you will give ALL the following information:

(1) Full name, former address, name of each periodical subscribed, for, and if on the Convenient Payment Plan

(2) New address (street, city, postal zone, state)

It has been found that changes of address are not practical under one week for The Christian Science Monitor and under one month for the other Christian Science periodicals.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

When you send a remittance to the Publishing Society, do you always send with your check or money order something to tell us what it is for? The "something" may be a periodical renewal notice, or the part of our bill on which your name and address are typed, or a brief note to tell us how you wish to have the payment used. We shall be grateful for your help in this way.

Christian Scientists experienced in mechanical divisions of the newspaper or printing industry are invited to inquire about service with The Christian Science Publishing Society. Letters giving details as to experience and general qualifications should be addressed to Personnel Manager, One Norway Street, Boston 15, Massachusetts.
