WORKING TOGETHER

From the March 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the following incident we see a simple example of organization and how it serves to increase the effectiveness of individual effort. One day there was a sudden shift in the wind with an accompanying drop in temperature. A member of a household was asked to close a certain window, but the sash had recently been painted and refused to budge. A guest suggested, "Why don't the three of us all pull at once?" This they did, and down came the window. What had seemed impossible for one was no task at all for three.

In the "Historical Sketch" in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, we read (p. 17), "At a meeting of the Christian Scientist Association, April 12, 1879, on motion of Mrs. Eddy, it was voted,—To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing." In order to fulfill the high purposes of church organization, it is necessary that Christian Scientists work together. This should not be difficult as we grow in the understanding of our true relationship to God and to each other.

The ideas of Mind are characterized by the one Mind, God, whom these ideas express and with whom they coexist. Harmony and order are the natural results of this spiritual coexistence. Moving together in obedience to the behest of divine Love, we take advantage of our opportunities as they appear, fulfill our responsibilities, and learn to exercise our privileges as actually the children of God. The prophet Malachi wrote (2:10), "Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us?"
