Testimonies of Healing

Knowing that the purpose of our testimonies...

From the August 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Knowing that the purpose of our testimonies is to glorify God and bless our fellow men, I feel it is time for me to give another testimony showing God's power to heal.

My first testimony appeared in the Journal for May, 1951. It told of a healing of heart trouble, high blood pressure, and other complications which the physicians said were incurable. However, their verdict was proved erroneous in accordance with Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, pp. 380, 381), "Every law of matter or the body, supposed to govern man, is rendered null and void by the law of Life, God."

I have had many healings since then; however, I would like to express gratitude for one in particular. This healing demonstrated to me again that to God all things are possible, and when we apply scientific prayer, prayer based on the spiritual understanding of God, healing must take place. About fifteen years ago, before I became a Christian Scientist, I had suffered for about a year from a stone in the kidney. During this time I had painful attacks of colic, and was forced to use narcotics and instrumental manipulation. Finally a stone passed with quite a bit of pain and hemorrhage.

About two years ago I was awakened in the middle of the night with a severe colic pain. Having been a physician, I recognized the type of the difficulty. Immediately the old picture presented itself, but I dismissed it from my consciousness. I was grateful that I had no fear, for I knew that God and His Christ would heal me. Then I began to work as we are taught in Christian Science. I tried to see the real man, who is spiritual and can have no pain. I realized that God created man for His glory and that He therefore had not made me to be a sufferer. The pain lessened but did not cease entirely.

I then realized that I must reach a higher understanding of man's at-one-ment with God as His reflection. It was clear to me that God is All-in-all, and since He is, there is no matter, no material kidney, no stone in the kidney, no pain as the result of a stone. I knew that right where the pain appeared to be, God was present, and therefore harmony was present. By taking my stand for absolute truth and refusing to allow into my consciousness the belief that a spiritual idea can have a discordant condition, I succeeded in putting out of my experience the pain that mortal mind attaches to such difficulties, and I fell asleep.

The next evening I was again attacked with the pain, but only momentarily, for I immediately denied it vehemently, and it disappeared. This experience was repeated for a few seconds the following two nights, after which the stone was expelled with no pain or bleeding.

This healing made me very humble. When I thought back to the unpleasant experience of fifteen years ago and compared it with the simple, natural removal of this stone by mental surgery alone, I figuratively went down on my knees to my Father-Mother God for His goodness in having led me to Christian Science. I could not but repeat aloud the words of the Psalmist (Ps. 103:1-3): "Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases."

I am grateful to God for all His blessings and to our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for her revelation of Truth. Also I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and for class instruction.—
