Testimonies of Healing

The way in which I was brought into...

From the August 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The way in which I was brought into Christian Science has always been a staff for me to lean upon. For many years I had suffered from low blood pressure with its attendant ills. I had a great fear of fainting and had to take long rests each day. Although I had consulted different doctors and specialists in my search for health, they had brought me no relief. I had always believed in God, and I felt somehow that He does not send illness and frustration. One night, being unable to sleep, I knelt down and prayed very fervently that God would heal me as He had healed through Jesus almost two thousand years ago.

One day about a week later I found myself looking into the display window of a Christian Science Reading Room. There I saw two books. One of them was the Bible, and the other was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I was guided to go into this Reading Room and get a copy of Science and Health. This book was a revelation to me.

In a short time I destroyed all my drugs and sleeping tablets. Very quickly I was healed of constipation of many years' standing. Since that time, over thirteen years ago, I have relied entirely on Christian Science and have never had to spend a day in bed through illness. During a severe attack of quinsy, which had troubled me for many years, I realized that God's love was all around me. The healing was instantaneous, and I have never since been troubled by quinsy.

I should like to tell of another healing I had. I awoke in the early hours one morning, feeling that I was losing consciousness. I could not move my head, and I felt that I was passing on. For hours I lay unable to move and praying to God to help me. Then as the daylight appeared, the following words came into my mind as clearly as if they had been spoken: "Act as possessing all power from Him in whom we have our being." I knew I must obey this angel message, and very slowly I was able to sit up in bed. By degrees I got dressed, and I was able to have the breakfast ready in good time without anyone's knowing of my experience.

On thinking over this healing afterward, I realized that the words which had come to me were from this statement in Science and Health (p. 264): "We must look where we would walk, and we must act as possessing all power from Him in whom we have our being."

About three years ago some relatives left their small son in my care and went to spend a month in France, something they had looked forward to for some time. About a week after they had gone I developed a severe cold, and I was troubled to think that I might have to call my relatives. One morning after the child had been taken to school I had to lie down, for I was feeling very ill. When a friend came in she said, "You are fevered."

The word "fevered" roused me. I said to myself: "Fevered? But God is not fevered."

Then a succession of healing thoughts came to me, and I knew that the image and likeness of God could not manifest a cold. By that time I was up and was entirely healed. The lovely thing about this healing is that since then I have been under conditions which hitherto had brought on severe colds, but I have remained free. As the Bible says (Eccl. 3:14), "I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it."

Daily I thank God for the Way-shower, Christ Jesus, and for Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered the Science of his teachings. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and for the Christian Science literature.—
