Israel at large in the wilderness, homeless, afraid,
Children wondering at the thundering host
Of Egypt's armies when their chariots came
Over the desolate dunes.
Could Spirit frame
A trap for helplessness? Were they all lost?
Then with moral courage Moses prayed
In righteous protest that his fear depart.
The miracle of Mind spoke in his heart,
"Go forward!"
No time now for foolish pride;
Here was escape! Thus shall we abide—
The law of Love has undiminished grace
To guide each faltering pilgrim to his place.
