In my desk is a Christian Science Quarterly with Bible Lessons for April, May, June, 1908, which was the year that I began my study of Christian Science. For over half a century this Science has been my great comfort and strength.
As a girl I was considered frail. Very early I became discouraged. After bitter disappointments, I saw nothing for which to be grateful, since human experience was not dependable. My childhood religious training proved inadequate; I was hopeless and desolate. Then, through Christian Science, an older brother was healed of rheumatism, from which he had suffered for years. His wife also, after having had two major operations and a third one recommended, was healed through this Science.
Because these two healings were outstanding to me, I began to study and became thoroughly interested in Christian Science. Gaining some understanding of God as presented in this teaching, I immediately found basic gratitude and learned of real joy; and through the ensuing human experiences, by steadfast endeavor to acknowledge the divine afflatus, I have retained much of this joy.
