THERE is no guesswork about cooking if one carefully follows the instructions given in the cookbook. One reads them over, assembles all the necessary ingredients, obediently takes each step as outlined, trusting the experience of those who have previously tested the recipe, and then confidently awaits a satisfactory result. The recipe is not personal. We do not need the author of the cookbook to be present or even another more experienced cook. The result is implicit in the recipe itself.
That precious volume which is the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, is full of clear directions for Christian healing, all of them thoroughly tested and, when followed obediently and trustingly, supremely successful. The chapter on Fruitage at the back of the book, consisting of one hundred pages of healings brought about solely by the study of the textbook, bears ample witness to this fact.
One example of these directions is to be found on page 495 and reads as follows: "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious —as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not."
