THE scientific truth, discovered by Mrs. Eddy and presented to the world as Christian Science, establishes the fact that man's real identity is entirely separate from the alarming fears of a material sense of existence and is safe in the arms of God, good, at all times. This fact can be made practical by demonstration, even when the material appearances seem quite to the contrary.
It is comforting to realize that even the veriest beginner in Christian Science, when motivated by the unselfed desire to share this truth with a fellow being, can be guided into a healing experience which not only illumines his own path but blesses his fellow men. An early experience which occurred long ago has often come to my thought when personal sense has presented the suggestion that evil could be alarming or assume identity. I made the acquaintance of a young woman who through our casual meetings during the luncheon period became interested in Science. She purchased the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and began to study it daily. I was most grateful for my new friend's interest in Science, but I was not prepared for the experience which followed shortly.
One morning I received a call from this friend, who said that she was very ill and wanted me to heal her. Knowing that she knew no other Christian Scientist and feeling that I must not desert her, I agreed to help her. The second morning she reported that she was no better and even seemed worse. The third morning the report was very serious, and many suggestions of error began plaguing my thought as I proceeded toward the office where I was employed.
