I have always been a student of Christian Science; but most of the healings I had while I was young were brought about with the help of my mother and a practitioner.
However, after my senior year in high school I went to Finland and stayed for two months with a Finnish family. The daughter had lived with my family while she attended school here the previous year. Her family lived in the country about one hundred miles from Helsinki, and while I was there our mode of transportation was the bicycle. One evening I was riding down the mountainside toward the cottage, when I fell and crashed into a tree. When I was found several minutes later I was declaring, "God is my Life."
Because the family I was staying with were not Christian Scientists, they felt it would be better for me to go to the hospital, and that night they drove me to the city. I was unconscious most of the time, and I awoke the next morning wondering where I was. I found that although I was under the doctors' care, instructions had been given that I was not to receive any medication or drugs unless I requested them. The hospital had had little, if any, knowledge of Christian Science, and the doctors were astonished but cooperative. During one of my short periods of consciousness I cabled home for Christian Science help. The practitioner immediately began to pray for me.
