Over twenty years ago I was healed of spinal arthritis and the smoking habit through Christian Science. While these healings were taking place I learned something of the truth of God and man and of their relationship to each other. However, I refused to become a part of the Christian Science movement. I was regularly attending the Wednesday evening testimony meetings and the Sunday church services of the Christian Science Society in the town in Massachusetts in which we then lived, but I refused to join the church. I sat week after week in the Wednesday meetings for nearly five years, almost bursting with gratitude to God for Mrs. Eddy and Christian Science and for what it had done for me.
I had never in my life spoken in public, and the mere thought of giving a testimony petrified me with fear.
I was president of a large company, but I always found some excuse to evade public speaking of any kind; so consequently I sat time and again through all sorts of meetings with good ideas, too timid to say a word. If I could not get someone else to voice them, they simply went unsaid.
