LOVE'S LIBERATION

From the January 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Mighty stirring agitates the world today as men, sensing the possibility of betterment, strive for liberation. Instinctively mankind seeks liberation from domination, want, disease, fear, and every form of bondage. Despite this striving, which has always accompanied the great advances made by humanity, the goal of liberation seems no closer. Each achievement seems to be faced with a new challenge, each advance plagued with a more menacing specter of fear. So ominous seem these specters at times that one may lose heart and wonder if liberation is truly attainable.

Liberation is often unattained because it is sought largely through material means —and material means can never liberate. How can materiality, which is the cause of bondage, become the emancipator of materiality? The Apostle Paul declared, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death" (Rom. 8:2). There is a way of liberation from all evil, and Christ Jesus, whose words and works are explained by Christian Science, points out this way.

When the leper, whose disease had made him an outcast among his people, pleaded, "Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean" (Matt. 8:2), Jesus, tenderly enfolding him in God's love, declared, "I will; be thou clean." And we are told that "immediately his leprosy was cleansed." When the woman accused of sin was brought to him, the Master mercifully shielded her from her accusers and separated her from her sin, saying, "Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more" (John 8:11). In like manner, Jesus compassionately reassured Jairus, whose daughter was reported to be dead, "Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole" (Luke 8:50), and the child was fully restored.
