ATTRACTING THE PUBLIC TO THE CHURCH

From the January 1965 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Spiritual preparation on the part of each of its members is the way that a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, attracts the public to its services, lectures, and Reading Rooms.

According to the organizational structure of the Church of Christ, Scientist, established by Mary Baker Eddy, its evangelical work is not delegated to a designated few. From the very inception of this church, spreading the gospel of Truth was the responsibility of every member. Jesus instructed his followers, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15), and Mrs. Eddy expected the members of her church to follow this Christly command. Obedience to it is an essential part of true discipleship for the Christian Scientist.

Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 2), "Goodness attains the demonstration of Truth." Love of good, which really means love of God and love for one's fellowmen, must develop into the full-blown attitude of every member of the church. Then he begins to comprehend more fully the real purpose of his church membership.
