Testimonies of Healing

Eighteen years have elapsed since a...

From the June 1965 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Eighteen years have elapsed since a testimony of mine appeared in the Journal. Since that time, and even before that date, I myself and members of my family have experienced numerous wonderful healings through the right application of the truth as taught in Christian Science.

There have been healings of broken bones, strained ligaments, and an alarming case of blood poisoning which appeared on my husband's leg a few weeks prior to his leaving for class instruction. He missed a few days from his office, but he was able to be at his post as usher in the branch church of which we were members. This was a beautiful healing, and much purification of thought resulted, followed by the joy of class instruction uninterrupted.

A condition of near nervous breakdown did not yield completely for quite an extended period of time, but during the struggle no incapacitation was experienced, and on occasion people who did not see me frequently remarked on how well I was looking. To me this was really the working out of the truth, for it proved that the real man sees only the perfect child of God regardless of sense testimony. During this experience extreme claustrophobia was overcome, and I am happy to say that being in crowded places now has no ill effect on me whatsoever.

While in college our son had a beautiful healing which attested to the power of mental surgery. Playing in an interfraternity football game he sustained a blow to the jaw resulting in breakage to a small bone located under the tongue. The injury was not known until after X rays were taken at the hospital to which he was transferred from the college infirmary where he had been sent because he was a member of the track team.

Prior to the X rays, the doctors labeled the difficulty quinsy, then a mouth infection, but there was no certainty in the diagnosis. No medication was prescribed, for our son's religious affiliation was known. One of the doctors on the hospital staff wanted to lance the swelling, the other physician who had sent the boy to the hospital did not agree; so surgery was withheld. The family knew nothing about the situation until our son telephoned and asked for help in Christian Science.

A practitioner was called immediately, and treatment was given. It was quickly arranged for me to fly to our son, and I remained with him for five days. He had lost considerable weight and was in a weakened condition having had no solids for some time because of the difficulty in swallowing. His release from the hospital was arranged for, and he spent the five days with me in a motel near the college campus.

The second day after my arrival the swollen condition was relieved. From then on, the young man was eating normally. On the day of my departure he ate steak and thoroughly enjoyed it. The medical prediction was that he would be unable to partake of solid food for at least six weeks.

Being a member of the track team, he was required to report to the doctor for a permit to return to regular practice. Upon seeing our son, the doctor remarked, "You look like a million." Throughout the entire experience we held to Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 463 of Science and Health, "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive."

About four years ago I had another wonderful proof of God's healing power when I sustained some injuries in our garage, including a foot injury. I declared over and over: "It never happened. All is well; God is with me." After managing to get back into the house, I was overwhelmed with a sense of fear, for I felt myself blacking out. As consciousness returned I was repeating words of truth, declaring that I was not alone, that God was taking care of me, and that I was "clad in the panoply of Love." Mrs. Eddy says on page 571 of Science and Health, "Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you."

I was able to get to the phone and talk to the same practitioner who had worked in prayer for our son. Treatment was immediately effective, for I was no longer trembling. Then a sense of self-pity tried to creep into my thinking, and this was followed by a feeling of nausea. Both states of erroneous thinking were eradicated when I telephoned again and talked to the practitioner.

Later, friends came and took me home with them to spend the night. Their lovingkindness and consideration, I shall always appreciate. The next morning found me greatly improved. The foot was still swollen and slightly discolored, but I could walk without too much difficulty.

This particular incident happened near the end of the week, but I was able to be in Sunday School to teach my class and later that same afternoon I attended a Christian Science lecture, walking with freedom.

Words are inadequate to express my heartfelt gratitude for Christian Science. It means everything to me. It has sustained, protected, and healed me, and I thank God for Mrs. Eddy and her consecrated efforts and the love she expressed to all mankind, giving to the world this very practical religion which heals and regenerates, for it is based on the teachings of Christ Jesus. For the faithful work of the practitioners who have helped me and members of my family, my gratitude knows no bounds. I am eternally grateful for membership in The Mother Church, for branch church membership, and for the blessed privilege of class instruction.—
