THE pace of change in the material world never was more rapid than it is today. The industrial revolution, a century and a half old, has escalated into a technological and scientific revolution that is only now beginning to reach its full momentum. With the resulting shift in the structure of the economy, old occupations disappear, new ones appear, and many that remain change their character radically.
Human progress comes from the discovery and application of constructive ideas and in no other way. Unaided human consciousness experiences progress laboriously by trial and error, because through the mist of false beliefs it discerns right ideas imperfectly and fails to understand their true origin. Christian Science teaches that all right ideas originate in the divine Mind. When spiritual ideas are understood, they destroy limitations in some degree and lift thought, and hence experience, to a higher, freer plane of action.
The Christian Scientist performs an indispensable function as he pursues his fundamental occupation of maintaining his thought in constant rapport with the one Mind. He sees spiritual ideas appear ceaselessly and bring to human experience precise, complete, and timely answers to critical problems, including those inherent in economic change. The activity of spiritual ideas upgrades both the general quality level of employment and the talents required to perform higher tasks.
