Christian Science came to our home when I was a young child. My mother had been given up by a heart specialist. He gave her just one month to live. She was also losing her eyesight as the result of a paralyzed nerve and had a stomach condition. On visiting another doctor, she was told he too could do nothing for her, but he said he had witnessed some healings brought about by Christian Science and recommended that she try it since the medical profession could no longer help her.
She did nothing about his recommendation, but two weeks later, a woman, canvassing from door to door, asked my mother if she would like to purchase a set of encyclopedias. My mother told her that it would be unwise for her to make such a large purchase since she was only to live a few more weeks and would be unable to pay for them. The saleswoman had just had her first healing through Christian Science and related her experience to my mother.
The following day my mother visited the practitioner who had helped the saleswoman. The simple words uttered by the practitioner, "God loves you," healed my mother's three physical difficulties on her very first visit. That night she slept for the first time in months and completely turned to Christian Science, giving up all her medicines and her former religion with no hesitancy whatsoever. She said, "If that woman could make me sleep in one treatment, I am going back to learn more about this religion."
