Finding the Lost Sheep

From the May 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If a sheep is lost, he is usually unhappy about it. He feels deeply the need for his shepherd, but he does not see him. Many people today are lost sheep, not because they have sinfully wandered away from their Christian religion, but because the growth of scientific knowledge has caused them to question and doubt the doctrines in which they formerly believed.

Bible stories which they once believed to be literal fact—stories such as those of Adam and Eve, Noah and the ark, Jonah and the whale—they now regard as incredible. And if these are incredible, they reason, how do we know that Moses actually received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai or that Elijah actually called down fire from heaven or that Christ Jesus was born of a virgin, rose from the grave, and ascended? Mere assertions that these things happened and warnings that failure to believe them will result in future punishment do not satisfy many moderns who would be Christians, who want to believe but do not know what to believe.

In contrast to those who are satisfied with their old doctrines, these lost sheep are the unbiased Christians who are ready to listen to an explanation of the Science which unites Christianity with provable Truth. Mrs. Eddy writes, "The unbiased Christian thought is soonest touched by Truth, and convinced of it."Science and Health, Pref., p. x;
