There is probably no chapter in the Bible that is better known or better loved than the twenty-third Psalm. Through the years men have derived hope and courage from its tender promises and when faced with death have been comforted by this superb statement: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."Ps. 23:4;
A Christian Scientist, laboring under a heavy burden of sorrow after the passing of a loved one, was reminded by a friend of the wording of this verse: "through the valley." She counseled, "Be careful that you don't remain in 'the valley of the shadow.' "
When one we love has undergone the experience of death, there is no necessity for us to linger in the depths of sorrow but every reason to pass "through the valley" with the confident expectation of emerging on higher ground with a clearer view of everlasting life.
