Christian Science came into my experience at a time when I was in great need of a practical religion. I shall never forget the joy of the first healing I witnessed, which came about through my own reading of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
After a week's illness, during which he had eaten or retained very little food, my husband was called by his employer to help fill a special order which had come in. This meant a walk of about a mile and a half from our home. On the way home he would have to climb a flight of about fifty steps, followed by a steep grade, before reaching level ground. He looked so thin and weak that as he left I got his consent to read Science and Health with his need in mind.
He knew nothing of Christian Science, and before this I had read only the chapter on Prayer. Through prayer I was directed to read from the chapter entitled "Christian Science Practice." As I read, I glimpsed for the first time the perfect man, entirely separated from any material environment but surrounded by the love of God and expressing harmonious activity.
