New Year's Resolutions

From the January 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

New Year's resolutions and those who make them are often the butt of cynical humor—and not without reason. Somehow these resolutions seem to fade mysteriously away after a short time, and old habits of thought and action reassert themselves. However, regardless of this good-humored derision, there is undoubtedly much value in taking stock of ourselves and making an honest effort to turn over a new leaf and begin afresh.

In Miscellaneous Writings Mrs. Eddy says, "With each returning year, higher joys, holier aims, a purer peace and diviner energy, should freshen the fragrance of being."Mis., p. 330; Our Leader was the most advanced spiritual thinker of our era, many of her healings equaling the demonstrations of Jesus and the apostles. But to her, last year's growth and accomplishments were not enough. She was ever on the move, climbing the heights of Science, gaining clearer and clearer glimpses of real being. The new year was just another challenge, another opportunity to know God better, to love man more, and to demonstrate the healing and regenerative power of Christian Science more effectively.

Her followers—you and I—can hardly rest on our laurels, for we have demonstrated but a tiny fraction of the spiritual power to which Mrs. Eddy attained. We have barely scratched the surface of the infinite possibilities of divine Science, and have many a league to go before we reach her level of spiritual vision and practical proof.
