One morning two summers ago I awakened...

From the December 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One morning two summers ago I awakened feeling quite ill. All sense of equilibrium was gone, and there was extreme dizziness and nausea. It was with difficulty that I managed to get to my desk. Grasping it firmly to keep from falling out of the chair, I endeavored to treat myself in Christian Science, rejecting the false suggestions that were attacking me.

A great fear swept over me, not because of the illness, but because of my inability to walk securely and to see clearly. It was Sunday morning, and I was serving as First Reader in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. As I looked at the clock, the fear increased and the physical symptoms became aggravated. It was no time for "lavender-kid zeal." The demand was for real and consecrated work to establish "the truth, the gospel, and the Science which are necessary to the salvation of the world." These thoughts which came to my rescue are from the book, Miscellaneous Writings by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy. The statement reads (p. 177): "Will you doff your lavender-kid zeal, and become real and consecrated warriors? Will you give yourselves wholly and irrevocably to the great work of establishing the truth, the gospel, and the Science which are necessary to the salvation of the world from error, sin, disease, and death? Answer at once and practically, and answer aright!"

A wise directive of our Leader is this one: "If students do not readily heal themselves, they should early call an experienced Christian Scientist to aid them" (Science and Health, p. 420). I did so. And the power of the Word was felt immediately.
