When I was a young child, I was enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School. There I began to learn something of God and His creation, including man, and what I learned has proved invaluable as a practical and effective way to solve any problem. With the help of this understanding I was able to finance my college education and meet heavy academic demands with high grades. During this period I helped form a Christian Science college organization and served it for a time as Reader, an experience I look back upon as a period of real growth.
About eleven years ago I was healed of a condition which affected one shoulder and arm with such intense pain that I could not use the arm or go to work. I called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment, and together we worked to recognize man's perfect, painless state of health. Within a period of two days all pain ceased, and I was able to return to work, though at this point the healing was not yet complete, for I could not raise my arm.
During my first day back at work I was examined by a medical doctor retained by my employer. He diagnosed the condition as bursitis, termed the case a severe one, and urged me to seek medical help. I explained to him that I intended to rely on the teachings of Christian Science to heal me. Having little knowledge of this religion, he told me that if I would not accept medication, at the least I should exercise and apply heat treatments to the affected area. Although appreciative of his concern, I saw that to apply such treatment would be an acceptance of the belief of man as material and a denial of man's being as the image and likeness of God, Spirit.
