Problems Are Opportunities

From the April 1970 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Every problem in human experience can be said to be an opportunity for the individual to awaken from the dream that existence is in matter to the realization of life in Spirit, God, governed by divine law. As one approaches problems from this viewpoint, he puts himself in the position of dominion. Problems seen as steppingstones in the course of one's unfolding spiritual understanding prepare the individual for the next step necessary in this unfoldment.

A time for spiritual growth has come, and what looks like a problem hints Love's divine impulsion forcing us to rise higher in spiritual understanding. The seed is within itself, revealing itself, making itself understood; and resistance in the form of material misconceptions can no longer hold out against the power of a dawning right idea. The Bible records Christ Jesus' remark about the sickness of Lazarus, whom he was to raise from the dead: "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby." John 11:4;

Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes in answer to the question as to whether healing the sick is the whole of Christian Science: "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science. It is only the bugle-call to thought and action, in the higher range of infinite goodness. The emphatic purpose of Christian Science is the healing of sin; and this task, sometimes, may be harder than the cure of disease; because, while mortals love to sin, they do not love to be sick." Rudimental Divine Science, pp. 2, 3;
