Christian Science has been a source of continuing health, harmony, and prosperity to me and my family ever since I can remember. In the hope that someone else will be encouraged to persist in study I humbly offer the following.
During my high school years I began to suffer periodically with difficult breathing. Being a student in the Christian Science Sunday School, I read the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly regularly and during times of trouble faithfully studied Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, but much of the spiritual meaning of the words I was reading needed to be better understood. I would gradually regain my strength each time after three or four days of sleeplessness and great discomfort. This occurred for some years. And since I was very well except for this trouble, I would always be taken by surprise and be indignant to have to interrupt class or work. It caused me great distress, and so I was driven to learn the lessons that are basic to health and well-being.
The first sentence in Science and Health was one I turned to constantly during testing times (p.1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."I did have an absolute faith that all things are possible to God, and this undoubtedly speeded my quick recoveries. Sometimes in direst need I would call a Christian Science practitioner and then soon gain relief. I never thought much about a material cause of the trouble or considered any material remedy.
