The "We and They" Syndrome

From the January 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Communication between the Christian Scientist and his non-Science friends and neighbors is sometimes hampered by what we might call the "we and they" syndrome. The Christian Scientist is considering himself and his church members as "we" and the rest of the world as "they." He is, therefore, setting up a barrier to effective communication right with that unthinking assumption.

The absolute truth taught by Christian Science in accord with the teachings of Christ Jesus is that all are the children of God. Divine Mind is the source of all creation, and every individual is already fully conscious of the truth because he is the expression of God. Man embodies all God's qualities. There is no "we and they" in the universe formed by divine Love. "For in him we live, and move, and have our being,"Acts 17:28; said Paul to the Athenians. All are one family and in one God.

This absolute understanding of what is right now true of God and His children is the reason for the evidence of good in each person we meet, no matter how tiny that evidence may seem to us at times. The suggestion that the Christian Scientist has access to something that the non-Scientist does not have is sometimes based on the claim of self-righteousness.
