Multiplying Our Sense of Good

From the December 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

All of us really want to multiply what is good in our experience. For a time it may appear that we want more capital for our business endeavors or better income to meet rising living costs—in short, an increase of material things. However, when we penetratingly examine ourselves, we find that our need is to enlarge our concept of human activities. The thing that needs to be increased is our understanding of the true, spiritual nature of our homes and jobs and relationships.

Certainly an improved idea of God's infinite supply, an ever-broadening concept of service to mankind, an expanded sense of peace and brotherhood, are all good ideas. When we can perceive the mental nature of enlarging, or multiplying, good, we can see and prove something of what Mrs. Eddy meant when she said in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health: "Spirit blesses the multiplication of its own pure and perfect ideas. From the infinite elements of the one Mind emanate all form, color, quality, and quantity, and these are mental, both primarily and secondarily."Science and Health, p. 512; What is truly inspiring about such an unfoldment in consciousness is that it is manifested practically in human experience.

Take, for instance, the account of Christ Jesus' feeding of the multitude in the wilderness. Light was apparently fading, and everyone was hungry. The disciples' thought was to dismiss the crowd and let each family go into a village to buy a little supper. But Jesus' loving, inclusive command to the disciples was, "They need not depart; give ye them to eat."Matt. 14:16; We can almost imagine the incredulity on the faces and in the voices of the disciples when they answered Jesus, "We have here but five loaves, and two fishes."
