Mrs. Eddy's brief note launching The Christian Science Monitor over sixty years ago is urgent and courageous. To the Board of Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society, Mrs. Eddy wrote: "It is my request that you start a daily newspaper at once, and call it the Christian Science Monitor. Let there be no delay. The Cause demands that it be issued now." Commitment to Freedom by Erwin D. Canham, p. 23;
Are we, as students of Christian Science, equally as imperative and expectant in our attitude toward our international daily newspaper? Each one can resolve today: Let there be no delay in my support of The Christian Science Monitor. The certain result is progress for ourselves and our fellowmen.
Many are deeply dissatisfied with conditions in their own neighborhood, in their country, in the world: crime, pollution, urban unrest, soaring populations, international tension. Supporting the Monitor gives us an immediate opportunity to speed social improvement and nourish true, spiritual advancement on the local, national, and international level. Our international daily newspaper points out the good that is every day going forward and uncovering impersonal evil—dishonesty, greed, prejudice, and the like—so it can be wiped out. Thus the Monitor does much to bring reform, enlightenment, and peace to our world. What if human opinion presents a battery of arguments to prevent us from experiencing the joy and inspiration of working enthusiastically for the Monitor! We can shake off false restrictions as quickly and gladly as we shed a wet coat when coming in after a storm.
