Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, identifies morality with God's law. Both morality and spirituality derive their power and consistency from Spirit. "The law of God is the law of Spirit, a moral and spiritual force of immortal and divine Mind." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 257; Morality, therefore, is not just a personal virtue achieved through human choice. It is the effect of spiritual power operating in us and in the world.
Moral qualities are in essence the absolute qualities of divine Truth made applicable in human experience. The moral code, from the Ten Commandments onward, is more than human opinions, customs, or social adjustments; insofar as it expresses divine Truth, it is valid in every age and society. Although some may question this enduring validity, Christian Scientists are deeply convinced that divine inspiration does indeed enter human experience and results in clear-cut uplifting guidance, moral and spiritual, for mankind. This moral code is both Christian and scientific. Being Christian, it is just and compassionate. Being scientific, it is practical, provable, and universal.
Morality derives from divine Mind and Truth, whose laws are reflected by man's spiritual identity. Mrs. Eddy writes, "Man has perpetual individuality; and God's laws, and their intelligent and harmonious action, constitute his individuality in the Science of Soul." No and Yes, p. 11; Since God's laws characterize our own true makeup, our very identity and individuality, every evidence of their expression—every evidence of morality and spirituality—appearing on the human scene needs to be nurtured and cherished. Morality, so understood and practiced, does not deprive or impoverish; it enriches and satisfies. It does not confine; it liberates human capacities to reach their full potential. And it helps develop our ability to heal spiritually.
