Preparing for Sunday School

From the October 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Those of us who know the joy of teaching in a Christian Science Sunday School have quickly learned that we should be properly prepared. We find inspiration in our prayerful study, but momentary inspiration is not enough. We need to establish firmly in thought and demonstrate throughout the week the spiritual qualities that make for successful teaching: consecration, alertness, spiritual intuition, love. Then on Sunday morning we will have attained and retained that altitude of thought which will act as an irresistible attraction to draw to us those ready for the blessings we are now prepared to share.

A consecrated Sunday School teacher prays for himself and his class daily. That is, he prayerfully recognizes and accepts the spiritual truth that God alone imparts understanding. He knows that Truth is revealing itself, unfolding in and as individual spiritual consciousness, and that a false, personal sense of responsibility can neither forward nor obstruct this unfoldment.

Prayerful work along these lines will soon reveal to him a higher concept of teaching than, perhaps, he has ever before realized. Mrs. Eddy states, "The student who heals by teaching and teaches by healing, will graduate under divine honors, which are the only appropriate seals for Christian Science." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 358; The consecrated Sunday School teacher may have ever before him this high goal. Healing should always be prominent in his thought.
