Before I was a student of Christian Science, I became very ill with thyroid trouble. While I was having rest treatment in a hospital before an operation could be performed, a woman came to visit me one day, at the request of my husband. He had met her at the hospital entrance, where he was waiting for a taxi. This woman came to encourage me. In her conversation she said she had had an operation for thyroid trouble, and that when she asked her surgeon what she could do to avoid a recurrence, he had said to her, "Study Christian Science." This she did. She was a picture of health and loveliness.
I recognized this as a message to me from God, which I would heed if I survived the operation, which then seemed doubtful. I weighed less than ninety pounds, and was in a weakened condition.
During the weeks I was in the hospital, the thought came very strongly to me that this was not Christ Jesus' method of healing, which I certainly would prefer, even though the doctors and nurses were exceedingly kind and helpful.
