I really came to understand the Bible for the first time through Christian Science; also through it I attained a true concept of God and an understanding of spiritual reality. I began to study Christian Science as a young girl; the books were sent to us from Berlin by relatives, for where we lived, along the Baltic, there were no branch churches and no adherents of Christian Science. At that time, when I did some reading in the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I found, in particular, that I became free of fear and worry and felt happy and secure. Great shyness and timidity were overcome, and I learned to live more confidently.
My first healing was that of nosebleed. As a young girl, for no apparent reason, I often had nosebleed, which was unpleasant when, for example, it began on the street. On one such occasion I went up to my room and thought about Christian Science, but I didn't know at first how I should think. However, as I turned to God, seeking the truth, the thought came to me: "But you are spiritual, the reflection of God." The notion that God, who is almighty and all-powerful, could have created such a thing as nosebleed seemed to me completely out of the question. At the same instant I knew that as a reflection of God, good, I could never have such a thing as nosebleed; it was simply unreal. The thought was so simple and clear that the next moment the nosebleed stopped, and I have never had one again.
Later my four children attended the Christian Science Sunday School in Berlin. How often my entire family has experienced healings through Science! Among the illnesses healed, sometimes through the prayerful work I myself did and often through the help of a practitioner, were so-called children's diseases, toothache, burns, suppuration of the ear, angina, scurvy, incipient blood poisoning, a sore on the sole of my daughter's foot, so that she could not walk, and inflammation of the lungs. I also experienced painless childbirth.
