About twenty years ago I publicly expressed my gratitude for Christian Science in the Journal, and it is time to reaffirm it. I came into Christian Science in 1904 through the healing of my mother of a physical difficulty for which she was already scheduled to have a surgical operation when Christian Science was presented to her. The healing in Science was very quick, and it was permanent.
In the more than fifty years of her life following this healing, she was only sick in bed once, and at that time she was eighty years old. Any other problems in our family life were also always readily solved through prayer. Some weeks before Mother passed on at ninety two, she said to me, "The thing which makes me happiest in life is that I brought you into Christian Science early and you stayed with it." This alone is reason for great gratitude on my part.
My Sunday School years were invaluable. I was a rather serious child, but I can hear to this day the words of my Sunday School teacher: "If Christian Science does not make you happy, you have 'missed the boat.'" I learned to be happy, healthy, and lighthearted.
