Removing Resistance—Glorifying God

From the September 1976 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Bible is filled with admonitions to praise and glorify God. Multitudes of sincere worshipers have earnestly desired to obey that admonition. But many have found it difficult to do so, for they have been taught that God sends sickness and death to the children of men to test and prove them and that they must yield to His will.

When Mary Baker Eddy received the divine revelation of Christian Science and gave it to the world, she set forth its teachings in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. This book includes a concise definition of God, which reads as follows: "The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence." Science and Health, p. 587; This gives a complete, understandable, and demonstrable concept of the Supreme Being. The myths, mists, and misconceptions are corrected and replaced by divine facts, spiritual illumination, concrete ideas.

One cannot love, appreciate, and demonstrate what he does not understand. To understand is to have a full grasp of the nature, significance, or explanation of something. Through this definition of God and its amplification in her writings Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, reveals a living, understandable God. Further, she presents rules for the demonstration of the student's understanding, which results in the glorification of God—His power made manifest in the healing of disease and imperfection.
