One outstanding example in our family showing that the Comforter, promised by Christ Jesus, is here in divine Science occurred when our daughter was three years old. She had complained of something hurting in her mouth. At first I had not paid much attention. Then at mealtime she cried out with pain, and I looked into her mouth. Above one tooth on the gum, the permanent adult tooth was starting to protrude in a very awkward position. The picture was startling, and it looked as though the tooth would have to be pulled and she could lose a permanent tooth.
Although this seemed to be a dental problem, my inclination was to have the situation treated through prayer in Christian Science. I telephoned a practitioner. She mentioned there are no overlapping burdens. Instantly I recognized this as apropos the situation. At the time our other daughter was six months old, and the care of two small children without household help sometimes seemed overwhelming. I rejoiced in the truth given to me and prayed with the desire to understand more fully that the Christ bears all burdens. The practitioner assured me that this child did not need to lose a permanent tooth. She also related a healing that her son had had of this same condition after a dentist said surgery and extensive dental work would be necessary. The entire condition had been healed through prayer.
A statement by Mrs. Eddy was most helpful to me (Science and Health, p. 496): "Hold perpetually this thought,—that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being." This passage helped me to see that indeed divine Love was the only power, cause, and presence.
