Wedding garments and the Lesson-Sermon

From the January 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This time it was different! Instead of just reading through the Bible Lesson,In The Christian Science Quarterly; I was discovering the deep message in it. Not just reading words, but pondering ideas. Not just going through the motions, but being moved with gratitude as each citation filled me with the power of Love's preserving care for its entire creation. What had changed this daily study time from habit to "happening"? Wearing wedding garments.

"Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment."Eccl. 9:8; We draw near God as we are clothed mentally in prayer's white garments— pure qualities of attentiveness, humility, expectancy, obedience. Certainly we can lack no inspiration (ointment) when we come to our daily study clothed in such qualities—in wedding garments— for these ensure it.

"The intercommunication is always from God to His idea, man,"Science and Health, p. 284; Mrs. Eddy tells us. Do we always come to our daily study attentively listening—eager to glimpse what God knows of His flawless universe—or are we too busy telling Him how we think things are?
