Christian Science offers us a sure remedy for egotism, selfishness, self-will, and self-love, because it corrects human character weaknesses with the understanding of spiritual facts. This Science reveals God as the one all-embracing Mind, as the sole center and origin of a universe of spiritual ideas. This realization changes our standpoint from a material to a spiritual basis, from the mortal ego to God, from self-love to the fact that God is infinite Love. It lets us forget a finite self and gain a vital interest in the well-being of our fellowmen, as we strive to demonstrate God's love and care for all.
Nothing is more valuable for our spiritual progress than the understanding of God as the starting point—as the creative Principle—of all true being. Mankind must learn that man and the universe emanate from this one source and exist only to manifest the pure light of being—the divine Mind—in all its glory. True life does not revolve around a physical body or a material personality as center, but around God. "Mind demonstrates omnipresence and omnipotence," writes Mrs. Eddy, "but Mind revolves on a spiritual axis, and its power is displayed and its presence felt in eternal stillness and immovable Love." Retrospection and Introspection, pp. 88-89. If thought circles around the mortal self, it does not reflect the central might of divine Love, which governs the universe.
How important to bear this fact in mind when sickness, pain, disappointment, or sin seems to bind action with fetters of self-will and selfishness! The material sense of self is not man—not as God made him. The selfhood of the real man, God's likeness, is included in the consciousness of God, in whom all real being is contained. The real man is expressive of the one Mind, whose government is supremely just.
